South Africa has recorded another 886 COVID-19 infectionS over the past day, pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,948,700.

The latest numbers include 18 586 antigen tests, the results of rapid antigen testing in COVID-19 statistics.

Fifty-one people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,635.

On the vaccination front, about 24.6 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says the increase in cumulative cases is attributed to the retrospective addition of 18 586 antigen tests, that include the reporting of 868 positive cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

“Retrospective antigen tests are being loaded to fill in gaps that existed while antigen test providers put systems in place to report to the National Department of Health (NDoH). ”

The NICD says the incorporation of antigen tests follows ongoing improvements to report as accurately as possible from all provinces and all testing facilities throughout South Africa.
