Should You Delete Your Facebook Account?
Following outrage over the Facebook scandal in which 50 million user’s data got into the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, questions have been raised about whether users should delete their Facebook accounts.
Facebook has come under fire after users discovered the Silicon Valley giant had been storing complete logs of incoming and outgoing calls and text messages including contacts in their address books, social events in their calendars and even friends’ birthdays.
On Friday South African-born billionaire Elon Musk deleted his company Facebook pages for both SpaceX and Tesla while co-founder of messaging service WhatsApp, Brian Acton, suggested it was time for users to ‘delete Facebook’.
Worldwide Worx Arthur Goldstuck says users don’t have to delete their Facebook accounts but should treat it and other social media accounts as a public platform and be careful what they post on line.
“What we’ve always recommended is that you curate whatever you put online. So, whichever social media network it is, whether Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn or any other, be aware that what you put on there is going to live forever. Even if you delete it, eventually someone may well have saved a copy of it.”
Meanwhile Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will appear before the US Congress to answer questions on data privacy and other issues.
The senate judiciary committee invited Zuckerberg to testify at an April 10 hearing.
