The Democratic Alliance (DA) says Gauteng residents are living in fear of their lives and those of their children, following the alleged kidnapping of an 11-year-old Grade 5 girl pupil at E.P. Baumann Primary School in Mayfair, Johannesburg.

There have been a spate of kidnappings across the country including a Mozambican national abducted on the East Rand, a 28-year-old Islamic scholar from Benoni, a Chinese national in Cape Town and A Pakistani national businessman reportedly also abducted on Wednesday night.

Durban businessman Saleem Tayob from Durban who kidnapped three weeks ago is still missing.

Last week the four Moti brothers were reunited with their parents after they were kidnapped while en-route to school in Limpopo.

The DA’s Sergio Dos Santos says the kidnappings are just a “drop on the ocean” as there are many such incidents that have not been reported by the media.

“We demand that more resources must be allocated to SAPS to find the culprits and to investigate whether there is a syndicate involved in these kidnapping incidents.”

Dos Santos  says without a well-resourced police service to keep people safe and protected, their lives remain under threat.
